If you watch the UFC, you know that the US Marine Corp sponsors the company. However a petition has been sent to the  Marine Commandant Gen. James Amos to drop sponsorship of UFC fights, which they  claim promote violence and bigotry. I’m not sure about the bigotry, but I think we can admit that there is violence in the UFC, but you think that would be a selling point to organization like the Marines. Interestingly enough, the petition isn’t coming from some sort of family based moral watch dog organization, or even a military oriented organization, its being pressed by UNITE HERE which is a labor union that represents  hotel, food service, and casino workers.

The head of the Union, said “I don’t follow the UFC and I don’t know the cast of characters, but when I see  the Marine Corps using them as recruitment vehicle and they’re using these  made-up characters to say things that I find personally disgusting, I’ve got to  take action, the Marine Corps should not be associated with  that.” Which really shows that he doesn’t know anything about the UFC or MMA in general and seems to be confusing it with Pro Wrestling. Sir, they don’t have a cast of made up characters…unless you are counting Chael Sonnon, but still no one asked him to act like that. It could also be because Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta who own the UFC also run a string of non union Casinos. In fact the Union admits that is really the main point. The line of logic is fantastic, “You aren’t union, but you should be. Therefore the Marines shouldn’t support you. Brilliant.

Now, in their defense, they point out that fighters often say really awful and stupid things either in interviews or through places like Twitter. And they are right, but have they looked at alot of Twitter posts? Its not exactly the source of balance and reason for our generation.

They also claim “We believe the homophobic and sexist statements of people associated with the  UFC are deeply at odds with the values of the Marine Corps and conflict with the  Defense Department’s stated commitment to tolerance and respect for diversity,” I think they are thinking about this incident.

But in the UFC’s defense, that was PRIDE, which was at the time a Japanese Company.

Thankfully, there has been no indication that the Marine Corp is planning to cut their UFC ads.

We all know them. It doesn’t matter if you train for MMA competitions, or if you are even in a combat sport. They are everywhere. I like to call them Tapout Kids, and they are spreading. They are a cunning hunter that wants to corner you and waste your time with trivia and options that the Internet would blush to be associated with, but like all true wannabes they have never worked in or trained for the sport which spawned them. They are at your gym, lurking at the mall, employed at your job and they can only be avoided if you know what to look for. Below is a list of signs that the person in front of you is a Tap Out Kid.

Well the “Cupcaking” has continued into this week, and I make no excuses, no that would require me to write something. No instead of excuses, I bring for your consideration, a man, an actor, and lately a fighter. I bring you a man with three first names. Jason David Frank. If that name means anything to you, then you truely are a nerd. Because he was a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger. Over the course of his “acting” career he played a green ranger (see the picture to the right), a white ranger, a read ranger and a black ranger. He has also appeared in more episodes then any other actor, 242! Naturally being locked into a never ending and low budget series liks this will lead a martial artist to either on of two paths. Rage binge eating or Mix Martial Arts, so it was unsurprising when he hung up his Ranger uniform and decided to fight a different breed of crazy people.

Yeah I know. Who’d have guessed this tough guy was under all that spandex? Its like when you pick a fight with a mall Santa. Some of those guys will mess you up! And the beard makes it harder to rear naked choke them. Although they are some of the few people upon whom I have ever pulled off a winding beard choke. But I digress.

Mr Jason David Frank is currently a 7th degree black belt in karate, and a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He’s 4-0 as an amiture in MMA and 1-0 as a pro. So far three of his five wins have been by submission, so that pretty impressive. He’s also started his own martial art called Toso Kune Do, which he says combines Aikido, Jeet Kune Do, Judo ,Kickboxing, Shotokan Karate, Thai Boxing, Weapons, Boxing, Grappling, Savate and Gunting

And yes I did say Gunting. I have no idea what that is, but I don’t make this stuff up. I copy and paste it from their websites. (You can tell because its spelled correctly). Anyway, I am looking forward to the continuation of this man’s career (you know, now that I know he exists)

Depending on what you read, MMA is either human dog fighting, a sport that should be included in the Olympics, what True martial arts should be, or an abomination that needs to be stopped. Therefore when you tell your friends and family that your are training for MMA, it will conjure many different pictures in their minds, here are a few.

This is what your parents think you do when you tell them you do MMA

Thats nice honey, I hear its good for your flexibility

As a martial arts instructor, I have found the growing popularity of the UFC and MMA on a whole to be really helpful in marketing and heck, just talking about my martial arts. People know what Kick boxing is, or what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu means. When I say Judo, I don’t receive nearly the amount of blank stares I used to get.

I read an article in Black belt magazine where Bill “Superfoot” Wallace said that MMA was a fad that would burn out soon. Of all the old martial arts greats, I tend to agree with Superfoot the most. However on this issue, it sounds like traditional martial artist denial. During the 1980s when the ninja craze hit, everyone was jumping on the ninja band wagon. Ninja turtle rip off logos were seen in dojos, everyone was teaching swords, nunchaku, and sai, even if their martial art didn’t include them. But MMA is different. It didn’t try to simply market itself to kids and nerds. It tried to get the respectability of boxing, with the mystic of martial arts. It wasn’t enough to get Tiger Claw and Century to sponsor things it worked to get sponsors outside of the martial arts world. It even recruited fighters from outside the martial arts world! It created an environment that made adults want to watch and kids dream of participating. More after the jump

Chael Sonnon has totally revolutionized trash talking in his own life time. Never again will fight match making be determined soley on where a fighter stands in the rankings, it will be based on each fighter’s aggressive PR campain.

To be honest, I think this attempt fell a little flat, I was hoping for something a little funnier, but you have to hand it to this guy he pursues his rematch with Anderson Silva with an energy that presidential candidates should envy. Continue reading »

Long before Fedor Emelianenko was famous as an MMA fighter, he was a Sambo and Judo champion in Russia. Russians take their martial arts more serously as a culture then we do here in America. When was the last time you watched Judo or Karate? Maybe as a bit part in the Olympics. Anyway the final fight for the Natianal Sambo Title was between Fedor and his little brother, Aleksandr. Skip to about 3:10 if you want to skip to the “fight”

As you might have seen…you did watch it didn’t you. I can wait….

Anyway you can see, it wasn’t much of a fight. It kind of looked like they hugged for a second, then Fedor decided to be a jerk and throw his little brother then armbar him. But then I started thinking with my mind brain and (yeah, my mind brain, don’t interrupt my mental process!) decided that apparently the brothers don’t fight each other. I’m sure its just being an American raised during the Cold war, but when ever Russians reach a championship, I expect either fight fixing or down right cheating anyway, so I can’t say I was surprised. Ever since Rock 4 I’ve been struggling with trust issues between myself and mother Russia, so bare with me there.

If you follow the UFC at all, you know Joe Rogan. He’s the really loud commentator who give the impression that he is on cocaine most of the time. I think this is due to being on cocaine most of the time. Of the two commentators who host the UFC broadcasts, he is the only one who seems to know anything about martial arts.

This comes as little surprise to most UFC enthusists who know that Mr Rogan is one of the senoir students of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu’s Eddie Bravo, who ironicly is normally always stoned. I hesitate to metion Mr Bravo ever since the rant I was lucky enough to touch off when I talked to Royce Gracie on the subject. However what some of us might not know is that Joe Rogan is a second degree Tae Kwon Do Black belt and national champion. And according to GSP, he has the best spinning side kick.

So who knew

For the longest time this was becoming the Chael Sonnon Blog, since that dude spews enough mock-able content that it made my job fairly easy. But to be honest I have strayed away from him for a while, so I think its ok to reopen the wound subject.

Chael Sonnen is now saying that the long awaited rematch between himself and Anderson Silva will never happen. “I can guarantee you Anderson Silva and I will never cross paths again. Our business is done. We will not fight under any circumstances no matter how many rules or fake restraints he puts on it,” Sonnen said. “He’s not getting in the Octagon with me, ever.”

Dana White, (Head of the UFC) however says, “I 100-percent, right here, right now, guarantee you that if Chael Sonnen wins his fight, that Anderson Silva will fight Chael Sonnen this summer,”

In Sonnen’s defense, we have to take this with a grain of salt, nothing is ever sure in a sport like MMA, there are any number of things that could postpone a fight between the Champ and the man who claims to be the Champ, injuries, weather, failing more drug tests, missing press events (see Nick Diaz), or just twittering the wrong thing at the wrong time. These last three are a great danger to a man like Chael Sonnen, who has had issues with drug tests in the past, and is kind of a loose cannon when it comes to the things he says and does to generate PR. Video after the break.

Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, the worlds scariest woman tested positive for stanozolol metabolites following a Dec. 17 title defense at “Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal.” Naturally I was shocked…that no one had caught her before this. I mean really, she looks like a man. Or at the very least a woman on a high diet of testosterone. She’s so tough that when she married, she might have taken her husband’s last name, but she made him take her fight name (Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos) ! I’m not sure if the officials tested her medically or if they just looked at her after her last fight and exclaimed, “Enough is enough!”

Anyway, they’ve suspended her from fighting for one year and fined her $2500.  Most pro fighters at this level only fight twice a year anyway, so she really just got a “lose a turn” card, and she made $66,000 off this last fight, so the fine is less then the taxes she owes on the match. Not that much of a slap on the wrist. A better punishment is not to suspend her, or fine her, just make her have to take a weekly drug test for a year, see what that does to her fight career.

I am kind of sad that she didn’t get to fight Ronda Rousey (currently ranked #2 in the world). She’s an Olympic medalist in and fourth degree black belt in Judo and trains with Team Hayastan. I’m really excited to see the two of them fight. Not sure how four total pro matches can net you the #2 slot, but at least Ronda doesn’t look like some female steroid monster. She just wins with awesome judo.
