Exclusive to From the Guard. In the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Eddie Bravo’s 10th Planet Style have created quite a stir. If you aren’t connected to BJJ, it might be mildly interesting to you anyway, heh. Anyway, Eddie’s main claim to fame (wow, I’m on a roll here), was defeating Royler Gracie at the Abu Dabi World Championship. After this win, Eddie went on create his modified BJJ system. He is also known for his favorable stance on marijuana, he feels that it is performance enhansing in Jiu Jitsu.
All that to get to the question, what do the Gracies, the founders of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu feel about these…tweeks to their system. Since I happened to find myself eating a late dinner with Royce Gracie I figured I would ask. More after the break.
From the Guard: Royce, I was wondering what do you think about 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, the system founded by Eddie Bravo?
Royce Gracie: It is trash, it is no good. It has a teacher that tells his students to drink and smoke pot. Besides, what did he ever win? Hmm? Where did he ever fight?
From the Guard: Well he did fight at the Abu Dabi’s and he did tap out Royler Gracie.
Royce Gracie: Yes, he did tap out Royler, but did he win the Abu Dabi’s?
From the Guard (panicing at the question and wishing I had done my homework better): No?
Royce Gracie: No. And besides that, what else did he do? Did he even have any MMA fights? No. But that’s fine, let him go around and tell people, its fine to drink, its fine to smoke pot, and where it end? Its fine to molest kids. Its no good.
And that was about all I could get out of Royce on the subject of Jiu Jitsu. I did however get to see pictures of his children (three of them), and pictures of Royce Gracies favorite guns. I thought it was just the community I live in where everyone carries pictures of their favorite guns with them, but no, apparently Jiu Jitsu masters do it too. I found out that the Gracies have enough guns to arm the western side of Brazil personally, and that Royce’s favorite hand gun is a .45 1911, but he has a soft spot in his heart for an MP5. Royce finally looked at me in the eyes and said:
Royce Gracie: You take $10 a week and save it. Pretty soon you buy good guns.
From the Guard: Uh, yes sir, sounds like a plan.
Royce Gracie: $10 a week, you understand? Sooner then you think.
So guys what do we take away from this? Royce Gracie isn’t a fan of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, and if you save $10 a week, you too can be rocking a sweet gun.
