The constant controversy in martial arts always comes down to a childish shouting match between marital arts masters and survivalists over who’s style is better or more realistic in real life. The more Combat Sport oriented martial artists will eventually offer to simply fight anyone to prove their point, the Reality based martial artist will point out that staging a fight where both parties know they are fighting and the circumstances in which it will take place invalidates the any true correlation to a real fight, and the Traditional martial artist will point out that their way has worked for hundreds of years, and therefore doesn’t need any more testing.

However one thing that we can all agree on, is that when you are truly fighting for you life, having a weapon trumps fighting empty handed every time.

I hate when I do that, basicly gave away the entire article in the title. That basicly means I am typing something that no one is going to read…oh, heh, so just a normal blog post for me.

In anycase, for anyone who has watched Xena, or anyother hokey show with woman warriors,  are used to this over done plot point. You know the one, warrior maid refuses to marry until she meets the man who can defeat her in combat. Because that is what women really want in a husband. Not a great job, not a caring personallity. No, they want a man who can and will rough them up and boss them around….naturally these shows are written by men who never have and never will get to know real women.

Or will they? In China there are two women, Xiao Lin and her sister Yin  who say they will not marry until they are challenged and defeated in combat by a suitor. Lin says “They can choose open-hand combat or any weapon they wish but we won’t be  holding back. If they can’t beat us, they aren’t worthy.” Her sister Yin says “We tried dating agencies but the men we met were all too weak. ‘We could beat  them easily. So we went back to ancient ways, called bi wu zhao qin, which was  how warrior princesses would find their men.”

And to top it all off, they will be wearing masks so their suitor/opponents won’t know which one they are fighting, or even what they look like until afterward. It sounds like a scam to me.

Sorry for all the videos lately, but with the Holidays, every spare moment has been filled. I am sure that the three fans I have forgive me, so I have this tid bit for them. Alot of Stick fighting school fall into the reality martial art side of the martial art continuum. I mean, if we want to be realistic, who wants to fight someone bare handed in the first place. Well in the video below, two crazy stick fighters beat the tar out of each other in the woods, in one of the more realistic sparring matches I think I have seen.

Ouch. I am not sure it was worth it. Kind of funny how it turned into a grappling match at the end. And they say BJJ is unrealistic.

Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.

Not fighting birds, that’s stupid… I mean using birds as weapons!

Birdjitsu is an art rarely practiced in the states, and is no doubt heavily prosicuted by PETA. Nay sayers might ask if fighing with birds is practical. I will gladly point out there are very few places in the world without birds! heh, hope you enjoyed this one as much as I did.

These aren’t for your kids. No matter how cool, I think this will get them in trouble if they bring them to school. They are Throwing Star Push Pins!

Basically one more way to annoy your coworkers, these are throwing stars missing one corner so they can be used as normal thumb tacks. The best part is that they are only $9.99 for a set of three! I don’t know if they can be shipped in time for Christmas, but I’m going to check. You can find them here.

Every morning as we get dressed, we ask ourselves, exactly what weapons should we be wearing. After all, weapons make the man. You want something less deadly then a gun, but not as lame as a can of mace.

Look no farther my friend, I bring you the mace gun!

I found it on Cabelas.com for only $60. It shots 7 shots per cartridge and even comes with a water cartage for target practice. Now you can be cool too.

Alot of reality based martial artists will question the point of studying a sword based martial art. After all, when was the last time you had a katana with you while you were grocery shopping? Tuesday…er… I mean its kind of a good point. But asking what the point of sword fighting in modern times is like asking why a normal red blooded American wants dynamite! Because we’re crazy its cool! No one really needs a .50 Desert Eagle, but I think we can all agree that we want one. And Christmas is just around the corner…so take the hint. Anyway, check out the kenjitsu dude below as he uses his katana to destroy all sorts of whatsit.

I’m impressed by both his form and the quality of his sword! And his willingness to subject it to harm. Even if its soft steel, I understand that is bad for the blade. I wish the video had subtitles, but I think we get the point. Happy day after Thanks Giving by the way.

This isn’t strictly martial arts related, but lets face it, martial arts are strongly linked with anything dealing with self defense and the fighting of zombies (Zom-jitsu). This knife was designed for divers to be able to stab and kill something like a shark in one attack.

The knife has a CO2 cylander in the handle and a channel drilled through the blade. Once you have stabbed your attacking badguy (or bad shark), you depress the trigger button and it blasts C02 into the wound, both freezing it and ripping it apart. Video of the knife in action after the break.

The only remaining master of the Indian martial art Shastar Vidya, master Nihang Nidar Singh is looking for an heir to the style. Singh has many students around Europe, but he claims that the most advanced students he has have only just reached the point where they can fight him without being hurt. I assume because their beards are no match for his yet.

I think I already touched on these weapons before, but they are still cool enough that they needed more of a focus. I feel the urge to mock these weapons, but I think this is bitterness from all the self inflicted wounds I picked up trying to learn the three sectional staff when I was younger.

Got to hand it to the Chinese. If there is a hard way to fight a guy, they’ve found it and made an art of it.
