As martial artists, it is normal and natural to compare styles. The stand up crowd thinks one way, the ground fighting crowd thinks another, and Chuck Norris just defeats us all. From this video I can tell the the Chuck Norris of our generation is already among us. In Art Marshall’s own words “The Gracies told me while I was training with them that 90% of all fights do end on the ground. My response to that was “90% of people have never fought Art Marshall.”

Its a little long, but totally worth the watch as every moment of this video is worth watching. I really loved how he promoted his student and gave him a double white belt. Thanks to Fitz for the tip.

Tell me that isn't kind of cool...in a fat kind of way.

Am I weird for wishing that more Sumo would come and fight MMA?

Don’t answer that.

I look at Sumo Wrestlers and I see martial artists with alot in common to today’s Combat Sport fighters. They live in their training camps, they focus solely on training and…heh…shaping their bodies to compete, and they are plagued by accusations of corruption and steroid usage. You may remember my article on them earlier this year

People like to point out that they haven’t done very well in MMA up until this point, but I want to point out that there have only been three Sumo to try so far. That really doesn’t give you a good picture of how the fighting style would do. I mean heck, pro wrestlers manage to do well, yes Brock, I am thinking of you, so why not Sumo? More after the break

Most of us love MMA, and after Saturday’s UFC (139) Shogun vs Henderson, I can really say that. However there are some among us who find such extreme violence to be disturbing and foolish. (Mom, I am talking to you), and for the sake of not fighting over Thanksgiving, I can see some of their points. However there is another group of people who feel that MMA isn’t extreme enough. With all the points for take downs, breaks between rounds, wearing gloves, and referee stoppages, perhaps we need something more “Extreme!” You might remember my post of the X-Arm competion? Well fighters of this ilk have done it again with the advent of Shock Fighting.

Here’s what you do, you attach a taser to each glove, and alakazam, the people who support the ban of MMA in New York suddenly sound much more sane. In mere MMA we only had to worry about broken bones, chokes, joint breakage, and concussions. Now we get to worry about several thousand volts of electricity! Is he tapping or just twitching? Who knows. Thanks to George for the tip. Hope you enjoyed.

You whaaaat?

I wanted to name this post, “I do not care: The New Tao of Jeet Kune Do: You can’t make me: The Scott White Story” But that wouldn’t fit in the title line. So you ask, hey Scott, why all the unprovoked anger today? And I say, “You’re not my dad! You can’t tell me what to do! If I want to run around the dojo wearing a Gi top and no pants….” er… thats a discussion for another day. But my inbox has been getting hit over and over again about the new updated release of the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, which in case you don’t know (what kind of martial artist are you anyway?) was Bruce Lee’s martial arts philosophy. Black Belt mag just did an interview with Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee’s daughter regarding the recently released and expanded version. I didn’t read it, but I am guessing she didn’t say, “Our family decided that if George Lucus can re-release Star Wars every couple of years for no apparent reason, so can we. After all, why shouldn’t we make money with almost no work and less point?” Which would be a shame, because I really would respect such honesty. I mean heck, it is America, where every citizen dreams of one day being paid for not doing much. Anyway here’s list of the reasons behind the release.

Really didn’t mean to ignore UFC 138 which marked the UFC’s first broadcast on regular tv. It did recieved more views then any UFC ever. Its amazing, if you go from charging $50 a view to free, more people will watch it. I’d say more on the subject, but I spent the day doing martial arts instead of watching martial arts, and totally forgot about it. So I’ve done what all of you have no doubt done, went to someone else’s blog and read what happened, so kind of pointless for me to plagiarize right now (not that I don’t admire plagiarizing).

Instead I want to talk about UFC 139. This of course features Dan Henderson vs Shogan Rua. Dispite the fact that this isn’t a title match, I am more excited about this fight then the last several hyped matches. Of course Henderson vs Shogan, but I’m even more pumped about Cung Le vs Wanderlei Silva and even moderately excited about the Urijah Faber vs Brian Bowles fight. More after the break

I think I already touched on these weapons before, but they are still cool enough that they needed more of a focus. I feel the urge to mock these weapons, but I think this is bitterness from all the self inflicted wounds I picked up trying to learn the three sectional staff when I was younger.

Got to hand it to the Chinese. If there is a hard way to fight a guy, they’ve found it and made an art of it.

Grand Master Ashida Kim has had profound impact on my life. When I was young, I had a bunch of his books on the Ninja. I still have them, I just find them funnier now. This video reminds you more of something Napoleon Dynamite would be practicing then something a “Ninja Master” would do while fighting you. If you pay attention, he will show a move he claims is from Judo, which sounds like “katsumi” which he says is the “Haze” technique. Doesn’t look like any Judo move I’ve seen. If any Judo expert would like to weigh in on this, that would be great. To be honest, I don’t think he knows Judo anymore then he knows Ninjitsu.

Today I bring you some vintage 1989 footage of a…fight(?) aired in South Africa. In this video is self proclaimed Ninja Master Ashida Kim. Kim is the dude wearing a ninja outfit and boxing gloves. Now I have waited on posting this video for a while because I still can’t figure out what the referee is wearing. After much thought, I’m going to go with a jet pack. Surprisingly, the other opponent seems out of place, looking strangely…fighterish. I am getting tired of seeing Bruce Buffer in a tux, Joe Rogan in some Affliction type get up, I think its time that Dana White starts kicking it up to South African standards. I want Herb Dean in a jet pack, Joe Rogan dressed (and acting) like a robot, Bruce Buffer dressed as Hulk Hogan. Yeah! Well I can dream

You might have to go full screen to catch it all. I don’t know about you, but when I hear “Forbidden” technique, I assume we are talking about something totally deadly and way better then the techniques you are allowed to use. Kind of the nuclear bomb of fighting. I wish that was the case. The throws you will see in this video (except for one) will instead make you ask, “Why is that illegal?” I don’t know. Most of these are legal in BJJ and all of these are legal in MMA. I don’t know why Judo has been systematically getting rid of their more effective throws for years, but I really wish they would stop it.

…wow, its…just wow. If you haven’t watched the video, I don’t know if words can describe what we just witnessed…ah…have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and said to yourself do you know what we need, something more violent then MMA? Something manly. Arm Wrestling is manly, but do you know what else is manly? Punching the snot out of the other guy while you arm wrestle him!
